The Bay of Kotor at an easy pace
From Cavtat the Montenegrin border is about half an hour away, so the Bay of Kotor is one of the easiest big days out from here. The road follows almost every curve of the water, with mountains straight up on the other side.
We take it slowly: time in two towns and stops wherever the view opens up.

Perast
Kotor
The plan
Perast
A small baroque town on the water. Boats leave from the front for the island of Our Lady of the Rocks.
Kotor
The walled old town at the very end of the bay. Walk the streets, have lunch, or climb some of the way up the walls to the fortress.
Viewpoints around the bay
On the way back we stop where the light and the traffic allow the best view of the bay.
Good to know
A passport or ID card is needed for the border, and summer queues can be long. The boat to the island and the Kotor walls have their own tickets.
Other day trips
-
Kotor, Budva and Sveti Stefan
The bay in the morning, the open Montenegrin coast in the afternoon.

Split via Ston and Makarska
A stop in Ston, the drive over the bridge and an afternoon swim at Makarska, then Split.
-
Split via Mostar
Mostar, and Počitelj if time allows, then down to the coast at Split.

Srđ, the Ombla and the big bridge
Two hours for the best views of Dubrovnik, from the hilltop above the Old Town to the river under the rock.
